NOMINATIONS AND HOST SITES NEEDED FOR INSPECTIONS IN 2001

In order to assist the Inspection Committee and the ATA Central Office in organizing next year's inspections, owners wishing to have mares or stallions inspected in 2001 must nominate them by March 1, 2001, or pay an additional fee. Please note that mares or foals nominated for a 2000 inspection and not presented must be nominated again for 2001.

The enclosed NOMINATION FORM should be completed and sent to the ATA Central Office by March 1, 2001. (No acknowledgments of receipt of these nominations will be sent.)

Members who wish to host an inspection are requested to complete the enclosed INSPECTION HOST APPLICATION also by March 1, 2001, and submit it to the Central Office to allow advance planning. Sites submitted after March 1, 2001, will be considered for 2002.

There is no cost to nominate a horse; however, any horse that is not nominated by March 1, 2001, although still eligible for inspection in 2001, will be assessed a fee of $75 in addition to the published inspection fee. The only exception to this are new members joining the association after January 1, 2001, and members who purchase and transfer a horse after March 1, 2001.

The inspection host site information will be cross-tabulated by ZIP or Postal code to determine the inspection sites that are most accessible to most of the nominated horses. Please note that a lot of checking back and forth regarding dates and inspectors' schedules is necessary and a final schedule of the 2001 inspection sites will not be available until after April 15.

After you see the list of inspection sites and dates in the May/June 2001 Trakehner Times, please carefully observe the closing date for entries for the inspection you wish to attend. If the Central Office does not receive enough entry fees accompanied by registration certificates by the respective deadline, that site will be canceled. Furthermore, if you have not submitted your fees and your horse's registration certificate by that date, the office staff will not know to notify you of the cancellation. Please respect the deadlines for the individual sites. They are very important in the inspection planning process.

TWO NEW EXCEPTIONAL MARES

It gives us great pleasure to announce that the following two mares have worked their way from the *Pb* status to the next higher level, showing that the family of ADEL ANDANTE *E* is getting better and better. They are:

Adrianne *Ps*
(show name Adel Adrianne)
foaled 1990 by Kantor II
out of Adel Andante *E* by Preussengeist
owned by Nancy Pille, Lansing, NY

and

Adel Arikka *Ps*
foaled 1991 by Ith
out of Adel Andante *E* by Preussengeist
owned by Donna Canfield, Binghamton, NY

Congratulations to their owners. Donna Canfield rides both of them. Quite an accomplishment!

LAST CHANCE

Don't forget, you have only a few more weeks to avail yourselves of the ATA's Millennium Registration Amnesty which will expire on December 31, 2000. Tell your non-member friends and clients that this is an opportunity that will not return soon — registration fees will most likely not come down but may go up sooner or later!

All complete applications for registration received before December 31, 2000, will be charged only the foal fee of $75 regardless of the horse's age (geldings $30) and late fees for non-submitted breeding certificates are waived.

LETTERS TO THE ATA

Dear ATA,

I just wanted to send a short note along with my dues this year to comment on the possible decision to discontinue the ATA magazine in its present form [The 1999 Annual Membership Meeting, Trakehner Times No. 1, 2000]. Let me just say that, as an admirer of the Trakehner, I would hate to see that happen. It was your magazine years ago that first sparked my interest in Trakehners (as opposed to Hanoverians or some other warmblood). The articles on history, bloodlines, training, and the horses themselves were fascinating. The histories and photographs brought the individual stallions and mares to life. The mare and foal issues and performance pages gave us all a chance to see the individual horses and breeding programs.

I loved the breed as I learned about it through the pages of your magazine, and today, because of your magazine, I now own and love a Trakehner mare instead of something else. I found her through your magazine, I knew about the various families through your magazine, I knew about the bloodlines and the stud farms through your magazine. I knew what I wanted and where to find it because of your magazine — I still have every copy and I refer to them constantly. If I ever decide to breed my mare, the primary research source for my stallion choice will be your magazine.

The Trakehner Times newsletter is a fine vehicle for letting us all know the news, but the ATA magazine lets us know the horses themselves, what they have done, and what they can do. It sets the Trakehner apart from all the other warmblood breeds out there. That isn't going to be replaced by combining it with some other publication. It would be a shame to discontinue such a wonderful source of information about our very individual breed altogether.

Thanks for listening,

Gale Winston, Palm Desert, CA

Dear ATA,

I just wanted to write you a note to let you know how much we appreciated your inspector's volunteered time and efforts in conducting the inspection at Cookeville, TN.

He was so patient with the young horses and very informative in the areas of conformation and movement.

Thank you for your time. I think everyone who was able to attend was most appreciative.

Sincerely,

Julie Baxley, Salem Meadow Farm, Ringold, GA

Re: Shagya-Arabians - Amendments to ATA Corporate Regulations

Dear Sirs,

As president of the International Shagya-Arabian Society I would like to point out that Shagya Arabians represent a distinct subspecies of Arabian that is more than 200 years old and is continually used in Trakehner and Warmblood breeding. This breed was developed in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy as an improver breed for the Cavalry. Shagya-Arabians are riding and driving horses and combine the advantages of the Desert Arabian (elegant type, great hardiness and toughness, endurance, easy keeping, and inborn friendliness toward humans) with the requirements of the modem riding horse. These requirements are sufficient height, big frame, and great rideability including great movement and jumping ability.

This breed is known as Shagya Arabians, a breed with its own stud book (the registry of the breed is the oldest next to the registry of the English Hunt Club), stallion testing and "Koerung." Contrary to the purebred Arabian breeders, the Shagya Arabian breeders as well as the Anglo-Arabian breeders never have ceased to select their breeding horses in Europe. The stallions passed the same testing as the warmbloods do, the 100-day testing.

The German Trakehner Society as well as Warmblood Societies accept the Shagya Arabian, an Arab based breed that does not belong to the purebred Arabians. A good example would be the stallion Bajar who had considerable influence on the Trakehner and warmblood breeding, not only by his son Bacchus. Burnus for instance derives from Lapis, another Shagya Arabian sire. The dam of Ramzes, Jordi, was a Shagya-Arabian too. Actually there are quite a few famous sport horses that show Shagya blood in their pedigrees (Milton, Calvaro, Condus, etc). Recently, the 10-year-old Trakehner mare, Bajonara by Bajar (Shagya) - Schiwago, under Ulrich Bormann helped the German team win the silver medal in the 1997 European Young Rider 3- day championships.

Shagya Arabians are not registered with the International Arabian Horse Association, as they are, not purebred Arabians. According to your Official Registry Book amendment to Article III C, no Shagya Arabians would be allowed in future. This, I'm certain, is a technical error, that needs your attention. The amendment could be enlarged for instance: "SHAGYA-ARABIAN MARE registered with the NORTH AMERICAN SHAGYA SOCIETY and that appears, or is eligible to appear, in an ISO approved stud book (Pure Bred Shagya-Arab Society International). There is a population of Shagya Arabians in the United States and Canada. Those horses are represented by the North American Shagya Society (NASS), Adele Furby, 8943 Moiese Valley Road, Moiese, MT 59824, 406-644-3498.

We do hope that you consider the Shagya Arabian breed as a genetic reservoir for the Trakehner breed that is known for its beauty and performance. We are sure that you recognize the important influence of the Shagya Arabian horse in the history of the Trakehner breed in the same way that the Trakehner Verband in Germany does. In case you need further information please don't hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely,

Gabriele Conradty - President, Neuhaus, Germany

Dear Members,

Thanks to the generous contributions from ATA members who think that the Trakehner horse should be represented at the world's largest breed show, we were again able to sponsor the Trakehner Breed Class at Dressage at Devon.

There were 11 entries this year, two of which unfortunately were scratched. We had a variety of horses in the ring, three stallions, four mares and a filly — a good overall representation of our breed.

For those of you who didn't show in our class, we give very nice prizes to encourage participation. The first place winner this year received a framable ATA awards certificate, a set of champagne glasses donated by the ATA, and a very classy dressage saddle pad with the ATA logo. Second place received an ATA awards certificate, a set of wine glasses donated by the ATA, and a large decorator tin filled with an assortment of pretzels donated by Utz Potato Chip Co., Hannover, Pa.

We also organized a Trakehner barn and all the horses entered in the class received a stall plaque, cookies and a Trakehner horse bumper sticker. I was also able this year to take many photographs of our horses. Since the show photographer required booking ahead of show time and charged exorbitant rates, I hope my pictures will be another added bonus to those of you wishing to show your horses.

I believe all of those showing had a really good time. There were a lot of good discussions about the horses, breeding, and the ATA.

An upcoming article in THE AMERICAN TRAKEHNER will focus on the show and its winners. For more information on the Friends of the Trakehner Horse, please contact me at 717-624-7834 or E-mail to kej-aradonus@blazenet.net.

Thank you all again for your participation in this venture.

Ellen Jones, Abbottstown, PA

THE LAST STUD BOOK OF TRAKEHNEN

Volume 6 of the Stud Book of Trakehnen was originally self-published by Landstallmeister Jürgen von Henniges in 1979. It includes all breeding records of Trakehnen from 1927/28 to 1945, making it the last stud book of Trakehnen. In addition, von Henniges attempted to collect all available data on those horses of Trakehnen that survived the trek, and to provide a complete breeding record for the post-war years as well — a huge amount of work that was possible only through the great dedication of von Henniges. He succeeded in creating a document both of the final era of Trakehnen itself and of the rebirth of the Trakehner breed in West Germany.

The book also contains fascinating background information on the Trakehnen stud, such as diagrams, its organization, and details on the people who worked there.

This valuable document is now being republished in a limited facsimile edition by Marion Vogel in cooperation with Jürgen von Henniges' widow. The reprint will be available this year for a pre-publication price of DM 98.00, afterwards it will cost DM 120.00. The book (706 pages, hardbound, in German) can be ordered from:

EVA UPDATE

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will soon publish an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPR) on Equine Viral Arteritis (EVA), giving anyone interested an opportunity to comment on how the disease and the proposed rules will affect them and the whole horse breeding industry.

Dr. Mary Giddens of the North American Dutch Warmblood Registry (NA/WPN) has assembled a lot of information on the effects of the disease as well as a sample letter to the USDA on their website at http://www.nawpn. org/eva.htm . She urgently requests your input in this matter and is available via E-mail at MHG@rosenet.net.

NEWS FROM GERMANY

TUAREG — STALLION OF 2000

The Trakehner Verband just announced that the 14-year-old dark brown/black Elite Stallion TUAREG by Radom, out of Tilsit III by Herzbube was declared the Trakehner Stallion of the Year as a result of his own success in competition and that of his get, among them most prominently the mare RENAISSANCE FLEUR TSF who shines as a young Grand Prix Dressage star under Monica Theodorescu. Tuareg, who was bred and still stands with Elke von Lingelsheim in Rondeshagen, Schleswig-Holstein, is partially owned by ATA members Franz and Elke Hollenbach, Puslinch, ON.

BOETTCHER'S LONGCHAMPS TSF

The most successful German Trakehner sport horse in 2000, BOETTCHER'S LONGCHAMPS TSF, the only other Trakehner in the Sydney Three-Day Event competition, was rewarded for his accomplishments by being named "Trakehner of the Year 2000" by the Trakehner Verband. He is a dark brown/black 1987 gelding by Sir Shostakovich xx, out of Lantana by Patron. He was bred by Maria Hoogen, Kevelaer, and is owned by his rider's mother, Mrs. D. Loheit. Ridden by Marina Köhncke, they rose through the eventing ranks to become Reserve German Champion and were sent to Sydney as individual competitors for Germany. The pair placed second after the dressage but then had back luck on cross-country and were eliminated.
