DNA TYPING FOR STALLIONS NOW MANDATORY

As mentioned in the March/April 1998 Trakehner Times, the period for voluntarily
DNA-typing your stallion at a reduced fee is now over, and the owners of the following
stallions are requested to take the necessary steps to get this accomplished.

If your stallion was originally blood-typed January 1, 1989, or later, the Laboratory at
the University of California at Davis will be able to pull the original blood sample from
their freezer and determine the stallion's DNA from it. The cost for this to ATA stallion
owners is $30. If your stallion falls into this category, all you will have to do is send
a check for $30 to the ATA office marked "for DNA-typing" and the office will do
the necessary paperwork.
For stallions blood-typed earlier than 1989, if they are still actively breeding and/or if
there are still some foals around that have not yet been registered, it will be necessary
to send a new blood sample to the University of California at Davis. Contrary to earlier
reports, it is not sufficient to send a hair sample. The lab will type the new blood and
compare it with the original blood type. If it is from the same horse, the new blood will
be DNA-typed for permanent record.
If your stallion falls into this category, please send a check for $60 (the regular
blood-typing fee) to the ATA office and request a blood-typing kit.
Please be advised that there is a good chance that the UC Davis lab will raise its fees
sometime this year, in which case the ATA blood-typing fee will also be increased.

MEISTERSINGER (May/June
1998)
The Approved Stallion, Meistersinger, by Tannenberg out of Menuett by Fasolt, has moved to
Region 5. Owned by Russ and Larrine Abolt, he is being leased by Suzette Bernhold, and
will stand until further notice at Karousel Farms, 8N005 Rt. 47, Maple Park, IL 60151 (Ph:
630-365-4423). Meistersinger is returning to active competition at FEI Level dressage, and
is standing at stud again after a long hiatus.
IMPRESSIONIST
(March/April 1998)
The stallion IMPRESSIONIST, OSB-A-S317 (by Hailo, out of Issel by Mackensen), owned by
Joseph L. Pimentel, Panama City, FL, fulfilled his performance requirement by competing in
and completing the Open Novice Division at the Sharpton Fall Horse Trials, Altoona, FL, on
November 14-16, 1997. Impressionist placed first out of 22 in his division and, according
to event secretary Shelley Lambert, had the best score of all 160 entries in the event. He
is now a fully approved Trakehner breeding stallion. Congratulations!
DNA ON FILE AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA
(March/April 1998)
Although we have asked repeatedly, only the following stallions have their DNA on file
with the University of California, Davis, CA:

For stallions who were originally blood-typed after January 20, 1989, there is no work
involved in getting this accomplished, other than sending a check for $27 to the ATA--the
precise amount that the California laboratory charges us--no sample taking, no vet visit,
nothing. The Davis lab will determine the stallion's DNA from the frozen blood sample it
still has on file from when the stallion was originally blood-typed. For older stallions,
a hair sample, with roots, is all it takes.
We will extend our offer of DNA-typing already approved stallions for $27 through the year
1998. Next year, or whenever we begin DNA sampling foals, any stallion who does not have
his DNA on file will be charged the full sampling fee of $60 or more for this service.
All stallions approved in 1997 or later are automatically blood and DNA typed for the same
fee after approval.
KOBOLT (Jan/Feb 1998)
The stallion KOBOLT, OSB-A-S318 (by San Remo, out of Keahi by Morgenglanz), owned by Moira
and Harrison O'Connor, Geyser, MT, and Upperville, VA, fulfilled his performance
requirement by competing in and completing the Novice Division at the Difficult Run Horse
Trials, Herndon, VA, on August 23, 1997. He is now a fully approved Trakehner breeding
stallion. Congratulations!
KRUSADER (Jan/Feb
1998)
The stallion KRUSADER, ORB-B-S959 (by Saxon, out of Pfeffer by Abdullah) was given
conditional approval as a breeding stallion at Hanford, CA, on November 8, 1996. It was
announced publicly at the time of the inspection that the approval was subject to the
receipt of a satisfactory veterinary report following endoscopic examination. As the
necessary report has not been forthcoming, the approved status of KRUSADER has been
withdrawn, effective December 1, 1997.
(It should be noted that the eligibility for registration of foals conceived by mares
which were bred to KRUSADER between November 8, 1996, and December 1, 1997, will not be
affected by this change in status.)
FABER (Nov/Dec 1997)
The Trakehner stallion FABER was humanely put to rest on November 6, 1997. FABER was
widely known for his extensive show career and for the champions he produced. He was a
truly versatile stallion who ranked nationally as a hunter, went on to a highly successful
eventing career and as a winning dressage horse. FABER was loved by all who knew him and
will be remembered for his kindness and eagerness to please.
