Model Mares *M*
This designation will be awarded to those mares which exhibit above average qualities of type, conformation and movement. It deals with external appearance only and gives an indication of the mare's high potential as a broodmare or for competition. It will usually be applied to younger mares, but may be given to mares of any age.
Using the scoring system in which the maximum score is 70 (Type/10; Frame/10, Legs/10; Walk/10, Trot/10, Canter/10; General Impression/10), the mare must have a total of not less than 56 marks; not less than 24 for Walk, Trot and Canter combined; and at least a mark of 9 for General Impression.
It is anticipated that this designation will be given to about 3% of eligible mares.
Elite Mares *E*
This designation is awarded to those mares which produce outstanding offspring. Minimum requirements are:
- two sons approved as ATA Breeding Stallions; or
- three offspring meeting the performance requirements for an *M* or a *P* mare; or
- one son approved as an ATA Breeding Stallion, and two offspring meeting the performance requirements for an *M* or a *P* mare; or
