Organizing a Mare Inspection
Information for Organizers of Mare Inspections
- Communicate with Inspector in advance - obtain name of Inspector for ATA office 2 weeks before inspection. (Before that date, Organizer may call the coordinator of inspections.)
- Book hotel accommodation - Most Inspectors prefer to stay in hotel. Try to keep costs down.
- Transport Inspector from Airport to Hotel, Hotel to Inspection site, back to Hotel and to Airport.
- Inspector requires a full-time General Assistant - to call horses to be measured, inspected, etc. A second Assistant is useful as a "runner".
- Some Inspectors require a Scribe or Writer.
- Arrange refreshments - coffee, soft drinks, and lunch if Inspection goes on into afternoon.
- Late, Post Entries, Walk-ons, of Add-ons, are at the Inspector's discretion. For Late Entries, Organizer must collect appropriate fee in advance, and have mare's original papers in hand before mare is inspected. Non-ATA members presenting Thoroughbred or Arabian mares must pay $50 and have JC or Arabian papers available. If accepted for the Preliminary Stud Book, a written report will be issued through the office, and the papers taken in. If not accepted, there will be an oral report only.
Requirements:
Suitable measuring facilities, usually in the barn. Please have measuring stick and tape available. (Vet examinations necessary for Stallions only.)
For assessment of Conformation, Walk and Trot in hand - a flat "runway", about 50 yards long, on gravel, packed dirt or asphalt. Please ensure handlers are familiar with the procedure.
Triangle - in an arena or outside ring. Cones or rails may be used to lay out triangle. Set up and size will vary with facility.
